Adult Sailing Classes

Part of the mission of West River Sailing Club is to introduce people to the sport of sailing.  To meet this goal, qualified members offer instruction to help people become confident and comfortable in small sailboats.  We use small sailboats because no they don’t require great physical strength to adjust the sails or to steer, and also because they provide immediate feedback to all sailors’ actions.

WRSC provides adult sailing courses to club members and the public, ages 18 and up. The goal of these courses is teach the basics of sailing and to encourage participation in the sport through active learning. Our objective is to spend as much time on the water as possible, focusing on the basic mechanics of sailing.

The club offers sailing instruction to adults in two kinds of boats: 19 foot Flying Scots and 15 foot Albacores.  The Flying Scot program lasts two days, while the Albacore program extends over four days.   Classes are held at the WRSC Clubhouse in Galesville and on the West River

What we do:
• Explain calmly and in simple terms the principles of sailing
• Use small, safe boats for on-the–water instruction
• Have instructors alongside in small powerboats to coach and provide assistance
• Provide plenty of on-the-water practice time in sheltered and safe Tenthouse Creek

What we don’t do:
• Yell
• Use large boats requiring great physical strength
• Sail in areas with lots of boat traffic

In addition to our Learn to Sail program, members may elect to participate in the WRSC Shared Boat Program (SBP).  This program enables members to qualify for use of various sailboats and to go sailing without having to own a boat or park a boat at the club.  At present the following classes of boats are available for use through the Shared Boat Program: Flying Scots, Albacores and Lasers.

WRSC is one of the most affordable sailing clubs in the area and the “provisional” membership makes it very affordable to try for a season while you meet new friends and explore if sailing is right for you.  Sailing on the Chesapeake with the WRSC Shared Boat Program West River Albacore Fleet is a low cost way to learn to sail and have fun throughout the summer.

Use of the SBP boats requires membership to WRSC and a small annual fee of $160* to cover maintenance and storage expenses of the fleet boats.  Participation is limited to four shares per available boat to enable maximum fun and use for all. Members can elect to participate in one, two, or three classes of boats.
